Keeping Sand Out of Your Dog’s Eyes & Ears
Sand and saltwater are part of every great Florida beach day — but they can cause irritation, infections, and discomfort for your dog if not handled properly. Here’s how to protect your pup’s eyes and ears for a safe, happy beach adventure.
1. Avoid Direct Sand Exposure
When dogs dig or chase toys on the beach, sand can easily fly into their eyes and ears. Try to keep high-energy play away from dry, loose sand. Wet sand near the surf is safer — it’s heavier and less likely to blow or kick up during play.
2. Use Eye Protection for Sensitive Dogs
Some dogs are more prone to eye irritation, especially short-nosed breeds or those with large, exposed eyes. Consider lightweight dog goggles for added protection. They shield against sand, salt spray, and UV rays — perfect for long beach days or windy conditions.
3. Rinse Eyes Gently After Play
After your beach visit, gently rinse your dog’s eyes using sterile saline or clean freshwater. This removes salt, sand, and debris before they can cause irritation. Avoid using human eye drops or harsh sprays — they can sting or dry out your dog’s eyes.
4. Protect Ears from Sand and Water
Dogs with floppy ears or narrow canals are especially prone to ear irritation from trapped sand and moisture. You can use soft, cotton ear covers or gentle ear wraps while swimming to help prevent debris from entering. Afterward, dry ears completely with a towel or pet-safe drying solution.
5. Avoid Inserting Cotton Swabs
Never use Q-tips or similar tools in your dog’s ears — they can push sand deeper or damage delicate inner structures. Instead, use a vet-approved ear rinse after the beach, letting your dog shake out the fluid naturally. This helps remove sand and salt buildup safely.
6. Watch for Signs of Irritation
If your dog is squinting, scratching their ears, or shaking their head excessively, they may have irritation or early infection. Rinse the affected area and keep it clean, but if symptoms persist for more than a day or two, contact your vet for proper care.
A few simple precautions go a long way toward keeping your dog’s eyes and ears healthy. With routine rinsing and gentle care, your beach buddy will be ready for more fun days in the Florida sun!
